One of my darling mother in laws came by to watch B the other night. She had with her a signed copy of James T. Farmer III’s cookbook. He was speaking at an event she helped plan and she was able to meet him and get a signed copy for me – HOW COOL!?
In speaking with him she mentioned her daughter in law had a food blog, A Life From Scratch. He responded saying he loved the name and signed the book ‘For A Life From Scratch – Love that!’ I die.
It’s funny how important the name is, right? Recently on vacation I was speaking with some really cool east coast people – doesn’t it seem that everyone on the east coast is cool? Maybe that’s because I am inherently Midwest. Anyway, in conversation food came up, as it always seems to do. I normally feel incredibly reserved and shy about this blog. Even though Google Analytics consistently confirm otherwise, in my head the only people reading this is my mother up the road and my few close friends. There have been countless opportunities for me to mention it or say I do more than ‘stay at home’ to people but I tend to hold back. This time though apparently I was feeling a bit more confident (was it the tan?) and I shared the name. I was immediately responded with a huge smile and ‘wow, I really like that. Is it about starting over?’
Funny. I’ve had a few questions about the name. I think it holds a lot of personal meaning, actually.
When I started this blog a few things were going on. It was a time for our family to start a new chapter – a better one. We had also been trying, for some time, to give L a sibling. You know that irritating advice ‘don’t think about it and it will happen?’ Well, I tried that and threw myself into developing this blog. It didn’t exactly work right away, but, 11 months later I got the good news I was going to have B.
And let’s not forget the obvious! Of course the name also refers to cooking – from scratch. Authentic and real stories from the kitchen, and life, is what went into this name. I think I picked well and I hope I can continue to hold up to the name.

LOVE this! It’s always interesting, to find out where the idea for a blog name was born and the meaning behind it. VERY cool cookbook! 🙂
I do love the name of your blog too – “life” being the best part of it!
That was nice of your mother in law to do that for you :0)
Easily one of my favorite blog names. It means more than cooking. Its about life being real.
