Time for another what WE wore Wednesday – yippee! I really enjoyed seeing all the pics on Facebook last week, I hope you can join us again or link up below. Toronto Mama and I love seeing each and every look – great inspiration!

Let’s begin. These pictures were taken from a pretty uneventful Monday. No real plans our day included the bus stop, bank, Trader Joes (B enjoyed playing with all the bags), laundry and attempting to play outside in the heat. It’s really hot here so we dressed to accommodate! Here is what we wore:

L: He is rocking some Brooks Brothers plaid shorts, a crewcuts tee, and Target gym shoes to school. Mohawk and a backpack are his accessories of the day.

B: It’s hot – especially if you have thighs the size of B’s. I dressed him in the most appropriate yet skimpy outfit we had – an Old Navy starred romper. I love this piece, we also have it in blue.

C: After some fantastic vintage market shopping this past Sunday I came away with a 70’s sundress (love the pattern and love the price – $13!) and a pretty unique bracelet. I saw one similar on a trip to New Orleans about a year ago in an antique shop – the price tag? $12,000. Um, no thank you. This one was had the same exact feel for $55. Much better. Toms wedges on the bottom. I’m totally channeling my inner Betty a la Mad Men in this look. Just waiting for Don – er – M to come home. Yes, M to come home.

I hope you had a super intensely fun weekend! Here is the play by play for our kitchen this week:

Sunday I was spoiled. I headed downtown with my parents WITHOUT any children to meet up with my middle sister, Allie. What? No diapers in my purse?! We dined out at an overindulgent brunch and went antique shopping so, pretty much the best day ever. Wait! It got better. I then headed to my sister in laws new home to see all the work they’ve done – so great. We dined on pizza and salad there and then it was back to reality in the suburbs.

And then it’s Monday and school is in full force! Lovely. Bus pick up at 4:15 and football at 6:00. We need a quick and flexible dinner – this one fits the bill. Hopefully I will get some baking in during the day. It’s been too long since we’ve enjoyed these killer brownies.

Tuesday let’s get this marinade going for some crispy chicken thighs, delicious! Brown rice and sugar snap peas on the side.

Wednesday we need to get back to our pizza as it’s just felt too long. I miss it.

Thursday night I have a girls night out – in the city, too fun! M will be on dinner, homework, football, bath, etc duty. Have fun my dear! In the midst of the craziness these will be waiting for you to enjoy.

Friday is my birthday – yikes! Don’t you just wish sometimes you could pass right by those? Unfortunately family and friend don’t exactly allow that. I’ll be dining out with this crew – it’s just not a birthday without them. Thanks to Grammie and Boppa for babysitting the little gremlins!

Summer Ribs.

Whew! It’s been quite a week. I never knew starting school would be so – draining? And I’m not even the one attending. I’m not exactly sure what my problem is but between early bus pick ups (well, early for us), back to school night, football practices, a traveling husband , a pep rally, and a girls night in? I feel….tired. And oh yea, thanks B for waking up at 5:20. Sigh.

Lucky for me today is Saturday and this particular Saturday is pretty open. We’ve got a football game to enjoy and then (hopefully) a lazy night in. M and I haven’t had dinner together in what seems like forever so we must get the green egg going and I’m thinking a classic summer dinner of ribs, grilled corn, and sliced tomatoes couldn’t sound better. Maybe if he’s really nice to me today I’ll also whip up some twice baked potatoes. Maybe. 

As far as the ribs go – I’m in love with this recipe. Bon Appetit can really get it right sometimes and they nailed this one. The trick? Bake in the oven until just barely tender and then let them hang out in the fridge. This helps really helps the ribs not fall apart on the grill. We had two perfect racks last time, one for us and one for my parents down the road.

Ingredients
  1. 2 1/2 tablespoons kosher salt
  2. 1 tablespoon dry mustard
  3. 1 tablespoon paprika
  4. 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  5. 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  6. 8 pounds baby back pork ribs (8 racks) or St. Louis-style spareribs (4 racks)
  7. Low-salt chicken broth (optional)
  8. 1 1/2 cups store-bought or homemade barbecue sauce plus more
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. Combine first 5 ingredients in a small bowl.
  3. Place each rack of ribs on a double layer of foil; sprinkle rub all over ribs.
  4. Wrap racks individually and divide between 2 baking sheets.
  5. Bake ribs until very tender but not falling apart, about 2 hours for baby backs and 3 hours for spareribs.
  6. Carefully unwrap ribs; pour any juices from foil into a 4-cup heatproof measuring cup; reserve juices.
  7. Let ribs cool completely.
  8. DO AHEAD: Ribs can be baked up to 3 days ahead (the flavor will be more developed, and the cold ribs will hold together better on the grill as they heat through).
  9. Cover and chill juices. Rewrap ribs in foil and chill.
  10. Build a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or heat a gas grill to high.
  11. Add broth or water to rib juices, if needed, to measure 1 1/2 cups.
  12. Whisk in barbecue sauce to blend.
  13. Grill ribs, basting with barbecue sauce mixture and turning frequently, until charred in places and heated through, 7-10 minutes.
  14. Transfer to a cutting board; cut between ribs to separate.
  15. Transfer to a platter and serve with additional barbecue sauce.

wwww & a back-to-school giveaway…!

Whew. What a big week we’ve had here so far! School started – so, that was kind of a big deal. L has been in school for 3 years now but it was preschool and Kindergarten. In our district K was the same amount of time as preschool so, no biggie. This year that all changed as L will be gone from me for eight hours (!!!!!). This is the real deal – big kid bus, big kid teacher, big kid classroom. I’m tearing up as I write this and when B goes to school I’ve decided that I will need to be medicated. Or make more babies. We’ll see.

Moving on….since the focus this week is SCHOOL we must make wwww all about our first day. And because I love you all, (I really do!) we are giving away a $50 gift certificate to Crewcuts (J Crew!) to spoil your little one. Their stuff for fall – it’s just too cute. L: You’ve only got one day to make your first impression, right? A tee from Zara that declares ‘awesome attitude’ seemed to fit the bill. Love the details on this one. Old Navy shorts and Sperrys complete the preppy look. The mohawk gives him a bit of an edge, which every little boy needs on his first day. It’s all about confidence, right?

B: Oh B. He wasn’t used to getting up and out this early. We are lazy bums in the am. So – at the bus, he his half dressed in a new graphic tee from his Aunt Molly. Superman pj pants because it’s still early. Doesn’t he looked thrilled? Later in the day we switched out the pj bottoms to some H&M shorts. Sorry, you can’t buy those thighs.

C: I was a physical and emotional mess at the bus stop in the am and frankly, no one wants to see that. By the afternoon I pulled myself together (kind of) and managed to throw on a J Crew vintage tee – love the jeweled collar! Gap kelly green shorts and Rainbow flip flops.

So, there is our back to school look. Can’t wait till fall kicks in and we can see some boots – too fun!

photo-450It’s always nice having L along on the grocery trip. B gets a show and I get a break while he is entertained. My back thanks you, L! 

Sunday night we enjoyed a smoked turkey breast cooked looooow and slooooow on the green egg along with M’s green beans and grilled corn. Now is most definitely the time to be eating grilled corn!

Monday night will be a perfect summer dinner – pulled chicken with pesto, parmesan, and fresh tomatoes all piled up on crusty ciabatta. Love this one.

We can’t get enough of this shrimp & asparagus dish so will be serving that up Tuesday night along with some brown rice. Seriously, this dish is 5 ingredients – try it! 

Wednesday M flies off to the east coast, again so I’m on my own. Time for some grilled salmon & veggies.

It’s back to school night and football practice Thursday night so I’m not quite sure I will have time to eat, let alone cook. I’m thinking Jimmy Johns will be in order. I’m kind of obsessed.

Friday night I’m hosting a little girls get together and haven’t fully decided the menu. I will keep you posted as the week goes on!
